31/05/2012 Scotland's Future - the big debate in holyrood on Scottish Independence PART 1/2
 | MSPs voted to agree that Scotland should be an independent country, after a debate on entitled Scotland's Future, on 31 May 2012. The motion, tabled by First Minister Alex Salmond calling on the parliament to agree Scotland should be independent, was passed with 69 MSPs voting for it and 52 against. Leading the debate, Mr Salmond said the Scottish Parliament currently could not make many of the key decisions that affect the lives of the Scottish people. Mr Salmond said Scotland had been successful in running its health service and schools, so why could it not run its economy, pensions and represent itself on the world stage. The first minister said at the moment all Scotland could do was mitigate UK Welfare Reform adding it would be "far better if this parliament had the power to stop the Tory dismantling of the welfare state". He went on to say: "Is it not an essential truth the best placed to run this country are the people of Scotland themselves". Scottish Labour leader Johann Lamont said: "In the world we now live in the more we cooperate the more we come together the better, rather than making our prospectus one of separation". Ms Lamont said the UK was the choice of Scots and that it was the choice of Scots to "share with their neighbours, stronger together". She accused the Scottish government of spending the first half of the parliament not governing Scotland, "but trying to sell us a bill of goods the majority of Scots do not want".
