 | Approximately 3 billion people living in remote areas of 127 developing countries are deprived of even the most basic dermatological care. Concurrently, there is a chronic and acute shortage of clean water and the enduring effects of poverty and strife. As a consequence, skin conditions constitute approximately one half of all disease encountered in the developing world. While skin conditions are not generally characterised by high mortality rates, ignorance and fear often drive stigmatisation and ostacism of sufferers, who are forced to retreat from normal life with devastating effects on family, community and national productivity. One might conclude that this devastating depth and breadth of impact would lead to commensurate funding but this is not so, skin disease receiving less than 0.5% of total annual R&D spend against neglected disease. But, there is hope, the good news is that skin disease is both highly preventable and amenable to treatment using very basic chemistry.
