The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is almost 2000 pages long! I don't know about you, but I don't have the time, energy, or will power to read all of that. That is why the Kaiser is a simple video that explains health reform to you in less than 2 minutes! Health care reform (nick named Obamacare) will affect almost all US citizens and legal residents. There are a few reasons for being excluded, but for the most part everyone must buy health insurance starting January 1st, 2014. On the positive side, you will not be denied coverage based on pre-existing conditions anymore! On the down side, if you don't buy health insurance you could pay a penalty as high as $2085 per year and if you smoke your health insurance will be more expensive. Another aspect of health reform is that individuals and families that earn low incomes may receive some subsidy for their health insurance from the government. How much will the subsidy be? How much will health insurance cost? We will have to wait until October 1st, 2013 to find out. That is when the "Exchange Plans" will go on sale for a January 1st, 2014 effective date.
